World - WTA boss mulling radical format shake-up

Women`s tennis boss Steve Simon said he`s considering introducing super tie-breakers and no-ad scoring for singles matches in a radical move to shorten them and make them more TV-friendly. The much-criticised season schedule is also in the crosshairs with plans to split the calendar into `premium` events and `pathway` tournaments and reduce the load on players, Simon told AFP. `To think that we don`t need to adjust our format so we can play matches that are 60 to 90 minutes in length as opposed to three hours, I think is very short-sighted,` he said in an interview at the Wuhan Open in China.

World - Trump-Clinton debate seen by record 84 million U.S. TV viewers

A record 84 million people tuned in to U.S. television networks on Monday night for the first presidential debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, a huge audience rarely seen on TV in the age of digital streaming and social media. The estimated ratings figure from Nielsen included people watching the raucous face-off across 13 U.S. cable and broadcast networks and public television station PBS. The audience beat the 80.6 million record set by the Jimmy Carter-Ronald Reagan TV presidential debate in 1980 but fell short of the 100 million viewers some analysts had predicted for the event.

The figure includes the approximately 45 million who watched the 90-minute debate on the four main TV networks, as well as millions more who watched cable channels, CNN, MSNBC, Fox News and other smaller outlets, CNN said. The figures, which are not final, beat the 80.6 million record set by the Jimmy Carter-Ronald Reagan TV presidential debate in 1980 but are below the 100 million viewers some analysts had predicted ahead of the face-off.

World - Trump vows to hit Clinton harder in next U.S. presidential debate

By Steve Holland and John Whitesides HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (Reuters) - Republican Donald Trump vowed on Tuesday to hit rival Democrat Hillary Clinton harder in the next U.S. presidential debate after she put him on the defensive by accusing him of being racist, sexist and a tax dodger during their first matchup. Clinton blasted Trump again the day after a forceful performance in the first of three scheduled presidential debates ahead of the Nov. 8 election. The New York real estate mogul, she said, `was making charges and claims that were demonstrably untrue, offering opinions that I think a lot of people would find offensive and off-putting.` Trump, making his first run for public office, praised himself for not attacking Clinton about the marital infidelity of her husband, former President Bill Clinton, during the debate at Hofstra University but said in a Tuesday morning interview with Fox News that he may take up the attack line going forward.
