World - Israel intensifies Gaza assault, Egyptians revise truce plan

By Nidal al-Mughrabi and Maayan Lubell GAZA/JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel knocked out Gaza`s only power plant and pounded dozens of other high-profile targets on Tuesday, while Egyptian mediators prepared a revised proposal for halting its war with Islamist militants in the enclave. Israel`s Channel Two TV said progress was being made on such a deal in Cairo, where a Palestinian delegation is expected later on Tuesday, although the station retracted an earlier report that a truce had already been provisionally agreed. Health officials said at least 84 Palestinians died in some of heaviest bombardments from air, sea and land since Israel`s offensive began on July 8 in response to rocket salvoes fired by Hamas and its militant allies. The Israeli assault intensified after the deaths of 10 troops in Palestinian cross-border attacks on Monday, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warning of a long conflict ahead.

World - More mysterious craters found in Russia`s remote Siberia region

Two more craters of unknown origin have been spotted in Russia`s Siberia region, weeks after a similar-looking hole was found in the isolated northernmost area, a local paper reported. The Siberian Times, an English-language newspaper, published pictures of two new giant holes discovered by reindeer herders, one located in the Yamal and the other in the Taymyr peninsula, both above the Arctic circle. Russian state TV reported earlier this month that a giant hole had appeared in the gas-rich Yamal peninsula where temperatures plummet below -50 degrees Celsius (-58 degrees Fahrenheit) and the sun barely rises in winter. Yamal, inhabited by indigenous reindeer herders, is one of Russia`s richest regions in natural gas.

World - Israeli TV retracts report Gaza ceasefire agreed

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - An Israeli television station retracted its report on Tuesday that a ceasefire in the Gaza conflict had been agreed, saying instead there was `movement` toward a truce between Israel and the Palestinian territory`s dominant Hamas Islamists being brokered by Egypt. `A senior (Israeli) official has clarified that there is no agreement on a ceasefire,` said Channel Two, which had earlier quoted a senior official, also unnamed, saying there was a provisional deal in place. World - Israel strikes house of Hamas Gaza leader, digs in for long fight

By Nidal al-Mughrabi and Ori Lewis GAZA/JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel`s military pounded targets in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his country needed to be prepared for a long conflict in the Palestinian enclave, squashing any hopes of a swift end to 22 days of fighting. In the latest development, Israeli aircraft fired a missile at the house of Hamas Gaza leader Ismail Haniyeh before dawn on Tuesday causing damage but no casualties, Gaza`s interior ministry said. Eleven people were killed in a strike on a house in the Bureij refugee camp in Gaza City as Israeli forces hit targets across the territory in the most widespread night of attacks in the coastal enclave so far. Hamas said that its broadcast outlets, Al-Aqsa TV and Al-Aqsa Radio were also targeted.

Business - BSkyB to pay $9 billion to create Sky Europe

By Kate Holton and Leila Abboud LONDON/PARIS (Reuters) - Britain`s BSkyB has agreed to pay $9 billion to buy Rupert Murdoch`s pay-TV companies in Germany and Italy, taking its hunt for growth into Europe by creating a media powerhouse with 20 million customers. BSkyB, in which Murdoch`s 21st Century Fox is also the largest shareholder, will pay for the deal using cash, debt, its stake in a TV channel and a placing of shares that represents around 10 percent of its issued share capital. BSkyB had flagged a possible deal for Sky Deutschland and Sky Italia in May. The price announced on Friday was slightly lower than expected by some analysts and the cost and revenue benefits laid out by BSkyB were greater than anticipated.
