World - South Africa deploys army to curb anti-immigrant violence

South Africa deployed the army on Tuesday in `volatile areas` to curb a wave of anti-immigrant violence that has killed at least seven people this month, the defense minister said. The latest wave of anti-immigrant attacks began almost three weeks ago in parts of the coastal city of Durban in Kwa-Zulu Natal and quickly spread to Johannesburg, South Africa`s commercial capital. Defense Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula said soldiers were being sent to `volatile areas`, which included the rundown Johannesburg district of Alexandra and parts of Kwa-Zulu Natal. South Africa has been criticized by foreign governments, including China, Nigeria and Zimbabwe, for failing to protect foreigners as TV stations broadcast images around the world of armed mobs looting immigrant-owned shops.

World - Lebanese journalist accused of exposing Hariri witnesses

By Thomas Escritt THE HAGUE (Reuters) - A Lebanese reporter and her TV station went on trial on Thursday accused of jeopardizing the case against the alleged killers of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri by trying to expose witnesses. A prosecutor at the U.N.-backed court in The Hague said broadcasts in 2012 by journalist Karma Khayat and the Lebanon-based Al-Jadeed TV station had risked ruining the investigation into the 2005 assassination of Hariri. `If witnesses are too frightened to come to this tribunal, then this tribunal is finished,` said prosecutor Kenneth Scott. `$500 million has been paid by us for this seven-star courtroom in The Hague.

World - Japan ruling party panel summons media bosses over news shows

By Linda Sieg TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan`s ruling party is summoning officials from two major media organizations for questioning about news shows, an aide to a lawmaker said, the latest in what some experts say is a push by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe`s administration to quell criticism. The Liberal Democratic Party`s (LDP) information and telecommunications strategy panel will question officials from broadcaster TV Asahi and NHK public TV on Friday, an aide to lawmaker Jiro Kawasaki, who heads the committee, told Reuters. Asked about the hearing, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said he didn`t know details but that he had been told there was no intent to put pressure on media. `This is clearly a case of the administration putting pressure on media,` said Kozo Nagata, a former NHK producer and now a professor of media studies at Musashi University.
