World - Britain fines Barclays £72m over `elephant` deal

Britain`s financial regulator on Thursday fined Barclays bank £72 million ($109 million, 102 million euros) for failing to carry out proper checks on a vast so-called `elephant` deal for ultra-wealthy clients. The Financial Conduct Authority said Barclays rushed through a huge £1.88-billion transaction in order to secure fees from a number of very rich customers. `The clients involved were politically exposed persons and should therefore have been subject to enhanced levels of due diligence and monitoring by Barclays,` the FCA added in a statement.

Davutoglu also said that discussions were taking place in the wake of the incident, which has sent Ankara`s relations with Moscow to their worst in recent memory.

World - UK, Argentina aim to `strengthen relations` after election

Britain`s David Cameron and Argentina`s president-elect Mauricio Macri agreed to `strengthen relations` between their countries after a phone call Thursday, Downing Street said. Britain and Argentina have long had tense ties due to their territorial dispute over the Falkland Islands, known in Spanish as Las Malvinas. Macri, who was elected Sunday promising economic reforms and seeking foreign investment, says he wants `good relations with all countries`.

World - Senior El Salvador priest fired over alleged sex with minor

El Salvador`s Roman Catholic Church said on Thursday it had fired a senior priest and former secretary of murdered Archbishop Oscar Romero after allegations that he had sex with a minor. The Archdiocese of San Salvador said its preliminary investigation showed Jesus Delgado, 77, the third-ranking priest in the country`s Catholic church, had sex with a minor aged between 9 and 17. `We will not cover up cases of abuse of minors,` said Monsignor Rafael Urrutia, chancellor of the Archdiocese of San Salvador.

British air force capabilities would make a difference in the fight against Islamic State in Syria, with precision strikes especially increasing pressure on the group, French Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said in a column on Thursday. The opinion piece in Britain`s Guardian newspaper was published after Prime Minister David Cameron urged parliament on Thursday to back British air strikes against Islamic State in Syria. Cameron told lawmakers Britain could not `subcontract its security to other countries`.
