Business - Apple margin concerns fade, focus shifts to iPhone launch

(Reuters) - A rise in margins has raised hopes that Apple Inc may be able to hold the line on pricing ahead of the launch of new iPhones later this year. Apple`s shares were set to open slightly higher at $95.33. Apple`s gross margin rose to 39.4 percent in the third quarter from 36.9 percent a year earlier, and the company forecast margins of 37-38 percent for the current quarter. `With (gross margins) stabilizing (year-on-year) and core demand trends solid, we think investors will want to own Apple stock (going) into bigger-screen iPhone 6 and ecosystem-expanding iWatch/iBand launches,` Evercore Group analysts wrote in a note on Wednesday.

World - Poll shows Brazil`s Rousseff would win presidential runoff

Brazil President Dilma Rousseff would win a second-round runoff against either opponent and has 38 percent of voter support ahead of her October re-election bid, a new poll by the IBOPE polling institute showed on Tuesday. Her main challenger, Aecio Neves, has the backing of 22 percent of potential voters while Eduardo Campos has 8 percent, according to the survey broadcast on TV Globo. The changes in voter intention for all candidates are within the poll`s margin of error from June, when Rousseff had 39 percent of support, Neves had 21 percent and Campos 10 percent, suggesting Rousseff`s support is not eroding as other recent polls have suggested. The approval rating of her government remained at 31 percent, unchanged from a month ago when Brazil was starting to host the month-long soccer World Cup. Her personal approval rating was also unchanged at 44 percent.

World - At least 38 killed in fiery China road accident: Xinhua

The collision in Hunan province triggered a fire and explosion which destroyed five vehicles, the Xinhua news agency said. Another five people were injured in the accident, which occurred at around 3:00 am, Xinhua said, citing police. The double-decker long-distance bus, with capacity for 53 occupants, was travelling between the eastern coastal province of Fujian and Guizhou in the southwest when the crash occurred. Fatal road accidents are a serious problem in China, where the highway network and number of new drivers are expanding rapidly while traffic laws and safety are widely flouted.

World - At least 38 killed in China highway collision: Xinhua

At least 38 people were killed in a collision between a bus and a van carrying flammable liquids in southern China, state media reported on Saturday, the latest in a string of accidents that have fueled anger over unsafe transport. The crash in Hunan province happened in the early hours of Saturday when the van drove into the back of the passenger coach, triggering a fire and explosion, the official Xinhua news agency said. Five vehicles were destroyed, Xinhua said. A series of accidents in recent years involving vehicles carrying school children have made such incidents a sensitive issue, particularly in China`s rural areas where roads are often poorly maintained.
