World - Polish holders of Swiss franc mortgages chide banks in Warsaw protest

Several hundred holders of Swiss franc mortgages demonstrated in Poland`s capital on Saturday, demanding banks ease the burden of these loans whose cost rocketed when the franc shot up last month following a policy shift by the Swiss National Bank. Blowing whistles and trumpets, the protesters marched through central Warsaw, stopping at the finance ministry and financial regulator as they waved banners denouncing the banks for granting the mortgages. `High instalments are affecting our lives, we have less money left to live on,` said Jakub Jedrzejewski, 37, while Barbara Husiev, 38, a widow with two children, said the initial 260,000 zlotys ($70,213) value of her Swiss franc mortgage, taken out several years ago, had risen to 407,000 zlotys, forcing her to take on two jobs. The Polish government, facing an election this year, has proposed a relief scheme that would involve banks cutting interest rates, but has ruled out a Hungary-style forced conversion of the mortgages into zlotys at historical rates.

World - Two Turkish police jailed for 10 years over protester`s killing

Two Turkish police were jailed Wednesday for at least 10 years for beating to death a teenager in 2013 protests against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, sparking fresh protests as critics slammed the verdicts for being absurdly lenient. The court in the central city of Kayseri sentenced Mevlut Saldogan to 10 years and 10 months in prison and fellow police officer Yalcin Akbulut to 10 years for the killing of Ali Ismail Korkmaz, 19, in the western city of Eskisehir on June 2, 2013. It was just the second verdict against the police forces over their conduct in the 2013 protests, while legal cases are in progress against thousands of protesters. After the verdict was read out, around 1,000 protesters clashed outside the court with riot police who dispersed them using tear gas and water cannon, an AFP correspondent said.

World - Suicide attacks kill 38 in NE Nigeria despite regional fight-back

Two suicide attacks in northeast Nigeria killed at least 38 people Tuesday, after Boko Haram razed a town and as violence raged across the embattled region less than six weeks from elections. Niger`s President Mahamadou Issoufou vowed that his country`s involvement in the four-nation coalition would herald the end for the rebels, whose six-year insurgency has killed more than 13,000 people. `Niger will be the death of Boko Haram,` he told a cheering crowd after a protest against the insurgents in the capital Niamey. In Nigeria`s Borno state, three assailants in a motorised rickshaw detonated explosives at a checkpoint at Yamarkumi village, four kilometres (2.5 miles) from the town of Biu, at about 1:00 pm (1200 GMT).
