World - Turkish police use water cannon on protesters decrying religion in schools

Turkish police used water cannon in the western coastal city of Izmir on Friday to disperse scores of protesters boycotting schools over the growing influence of religion in the classroom, local media reported. Education is the latest flashpoint between the administration of President Tayyip Erdogan, and secularist Turks who accuse him of overseeing creeping `Islamization` in the NATO member state. Riot police were out in force on Izmir`s streets, with water cannon being used to disperse banner-waving demonstrators who had gathered in the center of the city, according to pictures from Dogan news agency. Parts of some regular schools have been requisitioned to create more places for students in `Imam Hatip` religious schools championed by Erdogan, where girls and boys are taught separately.

World - North Korean leader tells army: `prepare for war`

North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un has urged his army to prepare for war with the United States and its allies, state media said Saturday, as Pyongyang ramps up the rhetoric ahead of US-South Korea military drills. Kim`s comments came after South Korea and the United States Friday conducted a joint naval drill involving 10 South Korean warships and a US Aegis destroyer, ahead of the launch of large-scale military exercises that have enraged the North. `The prevailing situation where a great war for national reunification is at hand requires all the KPA (Korean People`s Army) units to become (elite) Guard Units fully prepared for war politically and ideologically, in military technique and materially`, he was quoted by the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) as saying. North Korea regularly ratchets up hostile rhetoric at times of joint US-South Korea military exercises that spark a sharp surge in tensions on the divided peninsula.

World - Turks boycott schools, protest to demand secular education

Secular Turks opposed to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday boycotted schools and took to the streets to demand a secular education and denounce a claimed creeping Islamisation of the schools system. The protests were led by Turkey`s largest religious minority the Alevis, who adhere to an offshoot of Shia Islam, as well as leading education union Egitim Sen. It was not immediately clear how many pupils had failed to attend schools due to the boycott but Turkish media reports said it was followed in cities including Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Edirne, and Antalya. Police used tear gas to disperse scores of protestors demonstrating in Ankara, an AFP photographer reported.

World - Turkish teen protester with shattered skull sentenced to jail

A Turkish teenager who survived a severe head injury inflicted by the police in last year`s anti-government protests was sentenced to more than three months in jail, local media reported on Thursday. Mustafa Ali Tonbul, 17, lost a large portion of his skull after being hit in the head by a tear gas canister fired by police during Gezi Park protests that swept Istanbul in May-June 2013. A juvenile court sentenced Tonbul and four of his friends to three months and 10 days in prison for `resisting police` in another demonstration in the western city of Izmir in support of the Gezi protests -- two weeks before he was injured. Last year`s protests started as a relatively small environmentalist movement to save the Gezi Park, but evolved into a nationwide wave of protests against the perceived authoritarian tendencies of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, then premier.
