Business - French drugmaker Sanofi to step up push into China

By Matthias Blamont and Noëlle Mennella PARIS (Reuters) - Sanofi will step up its push into China, its second biggest market after the United States, in the next five years as part of a wider expansion into emerging countries, where it sees a large part of its future growth. `In the past years we have always managed to come up with a 5-10 percent growth in emerging economies and I think we will remain in this range this year, even if we should be closer to 5 percent than 10 percent,` Peter Guenter, Sanofi`s executive vice president for general medicines and emerging markets, said in an interview with Reuters. Emerging markets, with expanding middle-class populations, are a big opportunity for global drug companies, although growth rates have slowed in recent years.

World - Top UN official urges `new approach` to aid

Spending on humanitarian relief has tripled in the last 10 years but is still too small to meet demand, a top UN official told AFP Tuesday as she called for a fundamental re-think of the aid system. `We are spending as a world now three times as much on humanitarian relief as we did 10 years ago and it is still not enough. Every appeal is under-subscribed,` said Helen Clark, head of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

World - Ticketless fans expected to swarm France for Euro 2016, warn British police

Around 250,000 British fans will travel to France for Euro 2016 without tickets for matches, British police warned on Tuesday. Security at the European Championships was already being ramped up after the recent terrorist attacks in France and the prospect of supporters of England, Wales and Northern Ireland swarming into the country without access to the games creates more potential for trouble. In total around 250,000 UK supporters have tickets, but it is expected that double that number of fans will be in France throughout the tournament, which runs from June 10 to July 10.

World - Disappearing phone booths spur innovation at India child helpline

By Rina Chandran MUMBAI (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - India`s much vaunted mobile telecom revolution has caused a lot of anguish at the country`s only toll-free emergency helpline for street children and children in distress. Set up in 1996 when most calls came from telephone booths and manned public-call offices, Childline has watched uneasily as public landlines have disappeared over the past decade.
