World - Sanctions-hit Iran triumphs in football`s RoboCup

Iran may be lumbered with economic sanctions but that did not stop a local team of robotics experts from sweeping aside German and Dutch rivals in football`s RoboCup. On a green felt carpet, five teams -- three German, one Dutch and the other Iranian -- contested RoboCup`s 9th edition in Tehran, with the robots trying to prod a red ball into the back of their opponent`s net over two 10-minute halves. `The robots are completely autonomous -- we don`t have any control on the game and they make their own decisions,` said Novin Sharhoudi, 20, a student of software and computer engineering at Qasvin Azad University, northwest of Tehran. And unlike professional sport in which money can buy the best players, the RoboCup teams used identical machines designed by Aldebaran Robotics, a French company that also provided raw technical data for the programmers.

World - Beijing says one third of its pollution comes from outside the city

About a third of the air pollution in China`s smog-hit capital comes from outside the city, official media reported on Wednesday, citing a pollution watchdog. Chen Tian, chief of the Beijing Environmental Protection Bureau, said that about 28-36 percent of hazardous airborne particles known as PM2.5 came from surrounding provinces like Hebei, home to seven of China`s 10 most polluted cities in 2013, according to official data. The central government has identified the heavily industrialised Beijing-Hebei-Tianjin region as one of the main fronts in its war against pollution, and it is under pressure to cut coal consumption and industrial capacity. Decades of unrestrained growth have hit China`s environment hard and Beijing`s often choking air has become a symbol of the pollution crisis.

Business - Asian shares offer muted cheer to China growth

By Wayne Cole SYDNEY (Reuters) - Asian share markets were mostly in the black on Wednesday after China reported economic growth a touch above forecasts, a relief for investors who had feared a much weaker outcome. China`s economy grew 7.4 percent in the first quarter, from a year earlier, pipping forecasts of 7.3 percent. `But the problem is that the government has to resort to stimulus repeatedly to support the economy (which) means it`s having a hard time to unleash new growth drivers.` The relief rippled through regional markets with Japan`s Nikkei adding to early gains to be up 2.2 percent. Yahoo Inc jumped 10 percent thanks to strong results from Alibaba Group Holding Ltd, the Chinese e-commerce company in which Yahoo holds a 24 percent stake.

World - Royals lap up puppy love as New Zealand tour wraps up

Prince William and wife Catherine experienced Wednesday some puppy love from German Shepherds destined to be police dogs before departing New Zealand with baby Prince George for the Australian leg of a three-week tour. The couple, who included their own dog Lupo in an official family portrait released last month, fussed over the puppies and questioned their carers at Wellington`s Royal New Zealand Police College about the animals` eating and exercise habits. They also went walkabout in the heart of the capital at the end of their 10-day stay in New Zealand, where they have attracted crowds in the tens of thousands, even in small regional towns such as Blenheim and Cambridge. The numbers were down slightly in Wellington as the rain that has dogged their stay continued, with William commenting `Look at the sunshine!` when shown a picture of his father Prince Charles opening the police college in 1981.

World - U.S. greenhouse gas emissions fall 10 pct since 2005: EPA

U.S. greenhouse gas emissions fell nearly 10 percent from 2005 to 2012, more than halfway toward the United States` 2020 target pledged at United Nations climate talks, according to the latest national emissions inventory. The report showed that emissions dropped 3.4 percent from 2012 to 2011, mostly due to a decrease in energy consumption and fuel switching from coal to natural gas. The Environmental Protection Agency on Tuesday published the United States` 19th annual emissions tally to the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change.
