Business - BSkyB to pay $9 billion to create Sky Europe

By Kate Holton and Leila Abboud LONDON/PARIS (Reuters) - Britain`s BSkyB has agreed to pay $9 billion to buy Rupert Murdoch`s pay-TV companies in Germany and Italy, taking its hunt for growth into Europe by creating a media powerhouse with 20 million customers. BSkyB, in which Murdoch`s 21st Century Fox is also the largest shareholder, will pay for the deal using cash, debt, its stake in a TV channel and a placing of shares that represents around 10 percent of its issued share capital. BSkyB had flagged a possible deal for Sky Deutschland and Sky Italia in May. The price announced on Friday was slightly lower than expected by some analysts and the cost and revenue benefits laid out by BSkyB were greater than anticipated.

World - Venezuela says ex-general sought by U.S. to be freed in Aruba

By Andrew Cawthorne CARACAS (Reuters) - Venezuela said on Sunday that retired military General Hugo Carvajal, wanted by the United States over drug accusations and arrested four days ago on the Caribbean island of Aruba, would be freed and return home shortly. `A plane is taking off at this moment ... to go and pick up our comrade Hugo Carvajal,` Foreign Minister Elias Jaua said on state TV, hailing it as `a new victory` for Venezuela. Carvajal, head of military intelligence from 2004 to 2008 during the presidency of the late Hugo Chavez, was arrested on Wednesday after flying to the semi-autonomous island that is part of the kingdom of the Netherlands. Venezuela`s socialist government called the detention of Carvajal at Washington`s behest an illegal `kidnapping` and threatened reprisals if he was not released.

World - China`s anti-graft drive is making state media bolder

By Megha Rajagopalan BEIJING (Reuters) - China`s campaign to stamp out corruption has emboldened the country`s normally docile state media to push the barriers in exposing corporate wrongdoing. While it`s still off-limits to delve too deeply into what government leaders and powerful institutions may be up to, recent `undercover` state TV reports accusing state-owned Bank of China of aiding money laundering and a U.S.-owned food supplier of safety violations suggest the media are more ready to run critical reports. China`s central bank said earlier this month it was investigating allegations by state broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV) that Bank of China offers a service to help Chinese move more of their cash offshore than is allowed. Bank of China, the country`s fourth largest lender, has denied the allegations.

By 1700 GMT (13:00 EST), most demonstrators had been evacuated from the square and order restored.
