Business - Credit Suisse CEO sees conditions improving in 2017: Bloomberg TV

Credit Suisse Chief Executive Tidjane Thiam sees market conditions improving during 2017 as the bank`s reorganization gathers pace and its efficiency drive continues. Switzerland`s second-biggest lender has accelerated its transformation and achieved `a lot` in 12 months, Thiam told Bloomberg TV in an interview from Davos on Tuesday. Credit Suisse was now in a decent capital position and was progressing at `full speed` toward the flotation of its Swiss bank unit later this year, Thiam said.

World - Chinese official fired after calling Mao `a devil`

An official in northern China has been fired after he called the founder of modern China Mao Zedong a `devil` on social media and called the annual commemoration of Mao`s birthday `the world`s largest cult activity`. Mao, who died on Sept. 9, 1976, is still officially venerated by the ruling Communist Party as the founder of modern China and his face appears on every yuan banknote. In a statement late Monday, the Shijiazhuang Bureau of Culture, Radio, Film, TV, Press and Publication said that its deputy director Zuo Chunhe had been sacked for `posting wrong remarks` on China`s Twitter-like Weibo service and `serious violation of political discipline`.

World - Turkish police catch Istanbul nightclub attacker in city

Turkish police on Monday captured the suspected jihadist who slaughtered 39 people on New Year`s night at an Istanbul nightclub, detaining him in a raid on a residential area of the city after a long manhunt. The alleged assailant was found along with his four-year-old son in an apartment in the Esenyurt district of Istanbul after a massive police operation, state-run TRT television reported. The attacker had been on the run for over two weeks, after slipping into the night following the attack on the glamorous Reina nightclub on the Bosphorus.

World - Lara seeks statement win over Foreman in super welterweight defense

World Boxing Association super welterweight world champion Erislandy Lara is looking for a big win on Friday against Israeli ex-champ Yuri Foreman to springboard him to a unification bout and the middleweight ranks. Lara has just three wins inside the distance in 12 fights since March of 2013 -- a first-round stoppage of Ronald Hearns, a gritty 10th-round technical knockout of Alfredo Angulo in which Lara was down two times and a third-round stoppage of Jan Zaveck in November of 2015. In his most recent fight, he defended his title with a unanimous decision over Vanes Martirosyan in Las Vegas on May 21 in a rematch of their controversial draw in 2012.

Sports - Fox sells Super Bowl digital-only ad packages for up to $700,000

By Lisa Richwine LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The Fox broadcast network is selling digital-only advertising packages for next month`s Super Bowl for as much as $700,000 for a 30-second spot, though most advertisers are buying both online and TV spots, network officials told Reuters on Thursday. The strategy is a departure from last year, when broadcaster CBS Corp sold commercial slots for its digital live stream only to advertisers who also purchased TV ads. An additional 1.4 million viewers watched on digital platforms, CBS said.

World - Explosions hit Damascus military airport: Syria state TV

A series of explosions ripped through a military airport on the western outskirts of Damascus overnight Friday, Syrian state TV reported. An AFP correspondent heard several explosions and saw a large fire inside the Mazzeh military airport, with smoke ?visible across the capital. SANA TV, which is close to the regime, said the airport had been bombed.

World - Iran`s first jet purchased under sanctions deal lands in Tehran: TV

An Airbus passenger plane landed on Thursday at a Tehran airport, the first new jet directly purchased from a Western manufacturer by Iran`s flag-carrier IranAir in nearly four decades, Iran`s state TV reported. `The Airbus 321 just landed at Tehran`s Mehrabad airport ... It is the first step in delivery of about 100 more planes under an agreement reached with the Airbus company in 2016,` the TV reported in a live broadcast of the plane`s arrival. The delivery of the first jet in a batch of 100 ordered from Airbus by IranAir took place in France on Wednesday a year after sanctions against Iran were lifted under a nuclear deal reached with major powers in 2015.
