World - Dozens killed in prison riot in northeast Mexico: media reports


Dozens of people were killed in a riot and blaze at an overcrowded prison in the northeastern Mexican city of Monterrey early on Thursday, local media reported, days ahead of a planned visit by Pope Francis to another prison in Mexico“s far north. Milenio TV said up to 60 people were killed and dozens injured in the predawn riot at the Topo Chico prison. Prison director, Gregoria Salazar, told relatives that there was fighting in two areas of the prison and that inmates had burnt mattresses and a food-storage area.

Dozens of people were killed in a prison riot in northeastern Mexico early on Thursday, local media reported, just days ahead of a planned visit by Pope Francis to another prison in Mexico“s far north. Milenio TV said at least 50 people were killed in the predawn riot, and that some prisoners may have escaped. Milenio reported that inmates` relatives who had been within the jail`s premises for conjugal visits had seen inmates with burns, and that authorities were scouring for escapees.

President Hassan Rouhani urged Iran`s faction-ridden elite on Thursday to seek consensus after a hardline watchdog body disqualified thousands of moderate candidates from two elections this month, state television said. Rouhani, a popular pragmatist now reestablishing ties abroad after last year`s nuclear accord with global powers ended economic sanctions, spoke to crowds in Azadi Square in Tehran marking the anniversary of Iran`s 1979 Islamic revolution. The anniversary came amid intense infighting after the powerful Guardian Council barred the moderate candidates from running for parliament and the Assembly of Experts, which will choose the country`s next supreme leader.

World - North Korea leader flies private jet to oversee rocket launch: TV


North Korea released footage on Thursday showing leader Kim Jong Un traveling on his private jet to supervise preparations for Sunday`s long-range rocket launch and provided a rare view of the country`s newly upgraded space center on the east coast. The footage on North Korean state TV also showed the lift-off of the Kwangmyongsong rocket from a newly expanded launch tower and what appeared to be the first-stage booster separating from the rocket as it flew into space, seen from an onboard camera. Kim, who is believed to be 33, was shown having discussions with military aides onboard as he flew to the Tongchang-ri rocket station on a Russian-built Ilyushin jet that had been previously depicted in state media as his private jet.
