World - Armed men put Putin on the air in eastern Ukraine

By Thomas Grove ANDRIYIVKA, Ukraine (Reuters) - Armed men took over a television tower in eastern Ukraine on Thursday and switched it to Russian channels playing an almost non-stop stream of sound-bites from a marathon TV phone-in by Russian President Vladimir Putin. TV engineers accompanying the men then took Ukrainian channels off the air and replaced them with five Russian channels. The channels included Russia 1, Russia 24 and ORT - some of the most popular state-controlled channels - which were broadcasting clips of Putin`s TV phone-in.

World - Turkish parliament approves law expanding spy powers

Turkey`s parliament approved a controversial law on Thursday expanding the powers of the national spy agency and setting prison terms for publishing leaked information as the government fights back against a widening corruption scandal. The new legislation, passed after a heated debate in parliament, is the latest ammunition being deployed by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan as he seeks to push back against the greatest challenge yet to his 11-year rule. The law was first introduced by lawmakers from Erdogan`s AKP party in the run-up to local elections last month and has undergone a series of amendments to satisfy demands made by President Abdullah Gul, who is now expected the ratify the measures. The Islamic-rooted AKP won a resounding victory in the local polls despite a corruption scandal that has been fuelled by a steady flow of leaked classified information.

Last week, Turkey`s constitutional court annulled sections of another controversial law intended to tighten the government`s control over the judiciary.

World - Runaway spy Snowden is surprise guest on Putin phone-in

By Steve Gutterman MOSCOW (Reuters) - Edward Snowden, the fugitive former U.S. spy agency contractor who leaked details of U.S. intelligence eavesdropping, made a surprise appearance on TV phone-in hosted by Vladimir Putin on Thursday, asking the Russian president if his country also tapped the communications of millions. The exchange was the first known direct contact between Putin and Snowden since Russia gave the American refuge last summer after he disclosed widespread monitoring of telephone and internet data by the United States and fled the country. Snowden was not in the studio with Putin, who angered U.S. President Barack Obama by refusing to send the American home to face espionage charges. Snowden, 30, wearing a jacket and open-collar shirt and speaking before a dark background, asked Putin: `Does Russia intercept, store or analyze, in any way, the communications of millions of individuals?` `And do you believe that simply increasing the effectiveness of intelligence or law enforcement investigations can justify placing societies, rather than subjects, under surveillance?` he asked.

Business - Online retailers in Germany under fire over working conditions

Working practices at the German operations of two of Europe`s largest online retailers have come under fire this week, with more strikes at Amazon and Zalando being forced to defend its warehouse operations after a critical TV report. Hundreds of workers walked off their jobs on Thursday at Amazon distribution centers in the German cities of Bad Hersfeld and Leipzig in a year-long pay dispute, and labor union Verdi warned that more walkouts were to follow. `We are here and will continue to strike,` workers` representative Christian Kraehling told Reuters. `And there will be more, bigger strikes.` Verdi wants Amazon to raise pay for workers at its distribution centers in accordance with collective bargaining agreements across the mail order and retail industry in Germany.
