World - So far, foreign reporters in Pyongyang see sights, but not main show

By Joseph Campbell PYONGYANG (Reuters) - On the first day of North Korea`s biggest political gathering in 36 years on Friday, the closest visiting foreign journalists got to the action was across the street, hundreds of meters from the hall where the Seventh Workers` Party Congress was taking place. Inside the venue, an imposing stone hall the size of two soccer pitches, North Korea`s 33-year-old leader Kim Jong Un was presumed to be kicking off an event where he is expected to outline his `Byongjin` policy of simultaneous pursuit of nuclear weapons and economic growth. When journalists returned to the press center at their hotel, cloistered on an island on the Taedong River, four large flat screen TVs had been turned on for the first time.

By Maria Tsvetkova and Andrew Osborn MOSCOW (Reuters) - A special forces officer killed in Syria, nicknamed the Russian Rambo by state media, was buried on Friday in a blaze of publicity and pomp, with the Kremlin allowing blanket TV coverage as an exception for 25-year-old Alexander Prokhorenko. The senior lieutenant - whose media nickname refers to John Rambo, a fictional Vietnam veteran - had called in a strike on himself in March near Palmyra after being encircled by Islamist fighters, his commanders say. Russia has been keen to stress its role in helping the army in Syria retake the ancient Syrian city by providing air strikes guided by special forces troops like Prokhorenko but has at times been reluctant to admit its military losses there.
