World - Pakistani protesters clash with police, soldiers secure state TV


By Syed Raza Hassan and Maria Golovnina ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Pakistani soldiers and paramilitary forces entered the headquarters of the state television channel PTV in Islamabad on Monday after a crowd of protesters stormed the building and took the channel off the air. Protesters led by opposition leaders Imran Khan, a hero cricket player turned politician, and Tahir ul-Qadri, a firebrand cleric, have been on the streets for weeks trying to bring down the government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. Clashes broke out early on Monday and the state PTV channel and its English-language PTV World service were taken off the air after protesters stormed its headquarters in Islamabad. `PTV staff performing their journalistic duties are being beaten up.` A PTV source told Reuters the protesters had occupied the main control room and smashed some equipment.

World - Pakistan anti-PM protesters storm state TV


Hundreds of protesters trying to topple Pakistan`s government stormed the state broadcaster on Monday, intensifying the political crisis gripping the nuclear-armed nation. Transmissions of the main Pakistani Television (PTV) news channel were cut for around half an hour before security forces cleared demonstrators from the building in Islamabad`s high-security `red zone`. The brief seizing of PTV by protesters armed with clubs came after fresh street clashes in which police were pelted with rocks and responded with teargas. Late on Sunday the powerful army called for a peaceful settlement of the political crisis that has shaken Pakistan and weakened the government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

Imaginary television weather forecasts predicted floods, storms and searing heat from Arizona to Zambia within four decades, as part of a United Nations campaign on Monday to draw attention to a U.N. summit this month on fighting global warming. `Miami South Beach is under water,` one forecaster says in a first edition of `weather reports from the future`, a series set in 2050 and produced by companies including Japan`s NHK, the U.S. The U.N.`s World Meteorological Organization (WMO), which invited well-known television presenters to make videos to be issued before a U.N. summit on Sept. 23, said the scenarios were `imaginary but realistic` for a warming world.

World - Pakistani protesters break into national TV headquarters


ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Pakistani protesters broke into the PTV national television station`s headquarters in central Islamabad on Monday, the channel reported. It showed live footage of a crowd of men streaming into the building after breaking through its gate. The army has been called in to restore order, other channels reported.
