Sports - Watney soars high with 18 points in Reno

(Reuters) - American Nick Watney has never missed out on the FedExCup playoffs and he put himself in good position to maintain that record after charging into the first-round lead at the Barracuda Championship in Reno, Nevada on Thursday. Watney, who is on the cusp of qualifying for the PGA Tour`s lucrative season finale, piled up nine birdies to total 18 points at Montreux Golf & Country Club in the only event on the U.S. circuit which uses the Modified Stableford scoring system. `I do like the course,` California native Watney, who totalled only 23 putts, told Golf Channel after carding a flawless nine-under-par 63. I`ll take it.` Australian Geoff Ogilvy and New Zealand`s Tim Wilkinson were joint second on 16 points with Scotland`s Martin Laird and American Chad Campbell next best, on 13.

Sports - LeBron will return to 23 jersey with Cavaliers

NBA superstar LeBron James confirmed Sunday he will return to the number 23 jersey he wore in his first stint with Cleveland when he returns to the Cavaliers next season. James posted a message on Twitter and Instgram saying he would give up the number 6, which he had worn for four seasons in Miami after leaving the Cavaliers in 2010 and with US Olympic gold medal teams in 2008 and 2012. James wore 23 during his high school years in nearby Akron and with Cleveland, although some fans burned James jerseys after he announced his departure to the Heat. James signed a two-year, $42 million deal with Cleveland earlier this month, holding out on a longer-term contract until after expected new television deals boost maximum payrolls for future seasons.

World - Rescuers battle rains after India landslide, 150 feared dead

Rescue workers dug through deep mud and debris on Thursday in search of victims of a major landslide in western India that buried homes, with the death toll expected to reach 150. Following monsoon downpours in the Pune district of Maharashtra state, a hillside gave way early on Wednesday, sending a mass of muddy earth and trees tumbling onto a remote village while residents were sleeping. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) said 23 bodies and eight survivors had so far been pulled from the site, but heavy rain was preventing rescuers from working quickly to find more survivors. `Miracles do happen, we will keep looking, but under current conditions it is very, very bleak,` said Alok Avasthy, a NDRF regional commandant at the scene.

The United States confirmed it had restocked Israel`s supplies of ammunition, hours after finally sharpening its tone to condemn an attack on a United Nations school in Gaza. `Obviously nothing justifies the killing of innocent civilians seeking shelter in a UN facility,` deputy State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf acknowledged, in some of the toughest US comments since the start of the 23-day fighting in the Gaza Strip.

World - US slams Gaza strike, `crazy` Israeli attacks on Kerry

Amid the escalating death toll in Gaza, US officials finally sharpened their tone Wednesday condemning an attack on a UN school as patience with `crazy` Israeli criticism of would-be-peacemaker John Kerry snapped. `Obviously nothing justifies the killing of innocent civilians seeking shelter in a UN facility,` deputy State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf acknowledged, in some of the toughest US comments since the start of the 23-day fighting in the Gaza Strip. National Security Council spokeswoman Bernadette Meehan also condemned `those responsible for hiding weapons in United Nations facilities in Gaza` and warned of rising fears that thousands of Palestinians who have been told by Israel to leave their homes increasingly had nowhere to go in the blockaded narrow coastal strip. Relations between Israel and its staunch ally the United States have plunged in recent days after Kerry returned from a mission to the Middle East to try to broker a ceasefire between the Israelis and Hamas militants.
