By Lucia Mutikani WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Home resales rose in April to the highest level in nearly 3-1/2 years and prices surged, offering the economy a buffer from the stiff headwinds posed by belt-tightening by Washington. The National Association of Realtors said on Wednesday existing home sales advanced 0.6 percent to an annual rate of 4.97 million units, the highest level since November 2009. The data underscored the housing market`s improving fortunes as it starts to regain its lost glory. Resales were 9.7 percent higher than the same period last year. ...

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Home resales rose in April to the highest level in nearly 3-1/2 years as surging prices lured sellers back into market, which should support the housing sector and the overall economic recovery. The National Association of Realtors said on Wednesday existing home sales advanced 0.6 percent to an annual rate of 4.97 million units, the highest level since November 2009. The March sales pace was revised up to 4.94 million units from the previously reported 4.92 million units. The increase, however, was below expectations for a rise to a 4.99 million-unit rate last month. ...

By Yeganeh Torbati and Marcus George DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran`s clerical rulers may have sought to remove any challenge to their grip by barring two vivid contenders from next month`s presidential election, but they risk alienating voters already disillusioned by the violent aftermath of the 2009 poll. The June 14 vote will have little bearing on the policies that have long put Iran at odds with the West - ranging from its nuclear program to its support for Syria`s President Bashar al-Assad and Lebanon`s Shi`ite Hezbollah guerrillas. ...

By Yeganeh Torbati DUBAI (Reuters) - President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Wednesday he would ask Iran`s supreme leader to reverse a ban preventing his aide from running in next month`s presidential poll, a test of stability after the violent trauma of the 2009 vote. The Guardian Council, charged with vetting all candidates, disqualified Esfandiar Rahim Mashaie, Ahmadinejad`s former chief of staff, on Tuesday, as well as ex-President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani from the June 14 election, leaving a field dominated by hardliners loyal to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. ...

LILONGWE (Reuters) - Malawi`s luxury presidential jet, bought by late leader Bingu wa Mutharika, has been sold for $15 million to raise cash for the impoverished African country, a government official said on Wednesday. Mutharika, who left the economy on the brink of collapse after he picked a fight with donors whose support accounted for almost 40 percent of the budget, bought the jet for $22 million in 2009. He said the plane matched his status and was cheaper than flying commercially. ...

By Ju-min Park SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea has reappointed a hardline and loyal general as military chief in a move experts said was part of young leader Kim Jong-un`s attempt to tighten his grip on the armed forces. Kim Kyok-sik, widely believed to have been behind the shelling of a South Korean island in 2010 that killed four people, was named `chief of the KPA (Korean People`s Army) General Staff` by state news agency KCNA in a report on Wednesday. The four-star general, in his 70s, held that position for two years until 2009. ...

(Reuters) - The Cleveland Cavaliers won the NBA Draft Lottery and the top overall pick for the second time in three years on Tuesday. The Cavaliers were able to edge out the Orlando Magic, who had the highest probability of winning the top selection, as they continue to rebuild a franchise reeling from the loss of LeBron James following the 2009-10 campaign. `It`s huge for us,` Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert told reporters. `This is our third year in a row in the lottery. Hopefully it`s our last for a long, long time. ...
