World - Fierce Mosul fighting as Iraq army takes hospital


The Iraqi army met fierce resistance from the Islamic State group in Mosul Wednesday after taking a hospital deep inside the eastern half of the city, commanders said. The army`s 9th Armoured Division said it had retaken Al-Salam hospital, which lies near the Tigris river that separates the two halves of the city. The push launched on Tuesday is the farthest the army has penetrated into east Mosul since the start of a broad offensive launched on October 17 to retake the city from IS.

American Woods, 40, made his comeback after an absence of almost 16 months caused by chronic back problems to finish 15th in an elite 17-man field at last week`s Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas. `I thought it was a promising return by Tiger,` Jacklin told Reuters in a telephone interview from his Florida home.

World - Quake in north Indonesia kills 52: official


JAKARTA (Reuters) - Indonesian authorities said the death toll from a 6.5 magnitude earthquake that struck the northern province of Aceh on Wednesday has risen to 52. The number of casualties was expected to rise and more than 70 people had been seriously injured, said national disaster management agency spokesman Sutopo Nugroho. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake struck just after 5 a.m. (2200 GMT Tuesday) at a depth of 17 km (11 miles) on Aceh`s northeastern coast. No tsunami warning was issued. ...

Business - Oil slips on doubts that output cut will be deep enough to end glut


Oil prices slipped on Wednesday on persistent doubts whether a planned crude production cut led by OPEC and Russia would be deep enough to end a supply overhang that has dogged markets for over two years. International Brent crude futures were at $53.82 per barrel at 0608 GMT, down 11 cents, or 0.2 percent, from their last close. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures were down 17 cents, or 0.33 percent, at 50.76 per barrel.

There was no risk of a tsunami, according to Indonesian authorities.

`The earthquake was felt strongly and many people panicked and rushed outdoors as houses collapsed,` Sutopo Nugroho of the national disaster management agency (BNPB) said in a statement, adding that few injuries, and no deaths, had been reported. Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler will undergo surgery on his injured shoulder and will likely miss the remainder of the National Football League season, team officials said Thursday. Bears coach John Fox said Thursday the 33-year-old Cutler will have surgery to repair a torn labrum on his throwing arm and will be placed on injured reserve. Asked if this might signal the end of Cutler`s chequered career in Chicago, Fox declined to comment.
