World - Uganda charges 18 for murder of Muslim clerics

A Ugandan Muslim sheikh and 17 others have been charged with killing two fellow clerics, a case police said Friday is linked to Islamist rebels in Democratic Republic of Congo. `There`s a link definitely to the Allied Democratic Forces,` police spokesman Fred Enanga told AFP, referring to the small group of Ugandan-led ADF rebels, who have terrorised pockets of eastern DR Congo for the last two decades. Sheikh Muhammad Yunus Kamoga, the leader of Uganda`s Muslim Tabliq group, and 17 others were charged Thursday for the murders of two clerics, and the attempted murder of a third earlier this month, according to the government-run New Vision newspaper.

World - Israel issues tenders for new settler homes ahead of election

Israel published tenders on Friday for the construction of 450 new housing units in occupied Palestinian territory, a move that critics denounced as a political gesture ahead of a March general election. Ariel Rosenberg, spokesman for Israel`s Housing Ministry, said the government was simply remarketing tenders that had failed to sell when they were initially offered last year. Israel goes to the polls on March 17, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu seeking a fourth term in office. `Once again, Palestinian lives, rights and lands are being violated in the service of Israeli election campaigns,` said Hanan Ashrawi, a senior official of the Palestine Liberation Organization.

World - Israel to build 450 new West Bank settler homes: NGO

Israel on Friday published tenders to build 450 new settler homes in the occupied West Bank, a watchdog said, in a plan denounced by the Palestinians as a `war crime`. Settlements watchdog Peace Now tied the move to Israel`s March 17 general election in which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu`s Likud is competing with other rightwing parties for the settler vote. `It is a pre-election grab to establish facts on the ground made by the Netanyahu government,` a Peace Now statement said. It said the inevitable US condemnation would add to strains over Netanyahu`s acceptance of a controversial invitation to address Congress on Iran that has sparked a bitter row with the White House.

By Mukhtar Ahmed SHIKARPUR, Pakistan (Reuters) - At least 49 people were killed in a powerful explosion at a crowded Shi`ite mosque in Pakistan during Friday prayers, the latest sectarian attack to hit the South Asian nation. World - Sierra Nevada red fox, one of North America`s rarest, seen at Yosemite

Biologists have spotted a Sierra Nevada red fox at Yosemite National Park in California for the first time - a sighting of one of the rarest mammals in North America, thought to number only 50 on the continent, officials said on Thursday. Wildlife biologists who went on a backcountry trip to the far northern part of the park documented sightings of the endangered animal on Dec. 13 and Jan. 4, the National Park Service said in a statement. `Confirmation of the Sierra Nevada red fox in Yosemite National Park`s vast alpine wilderness provides an opportunity to join research partners in helping to protect this imperiled animal,` Sarah Stock, a biologist at the park, said in a statement. The nearest sightings of the red fox species have been in the Sonora Pass area north of the park, where biologists have monitored a small group of the animals since 2010, officials said.
